PRESS PATTERNS

Who's Playing Games?   [Stephen Spruiell]

The news media are predictably reporting that the GOP is just playing politics with its resolution condemning the news media for publishing the details of the Terrorist Finance Tracking Program. But a look at the Democrats' substitute resolution (PDF) — which expresses support for the program but does not condemn the media for undermining it — reveals this bit of cynical political maneuvering:

Who's Playing Politics?

The scribbled-in edit is clearly a reference to Valerie Plame, the outing of whom was clearly the greatest blow to intelligence-gathering in our nation's history. This blatant political ploy is probably an attempt to distract from the Democrats' incoherent position — they support the program, but they won't express any disapproval towards the journalists who compromised its effectiveness.
