Don't Gregory, Mitchell Owe Us An Explanation? [Stephen Spruiell]
Byron York's latest dispatch from the Libby trial reveals inconsistencies in the way special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald treated reporters — specifically, how he aggressively went after those whose testimony could help prove his theory of the case while allowing others with knowledge of the leak to get out of testifying.
NBC correspondents David Gregory and Andrea Mitchell fall into that latter camp, and York is correct to criticize Fitzgerald for holding them to a different standard. But, independent of Fitzgerald's investigation, shouldn't Gregory and Mitchell — or at least somebody at NBC — explain their involvement in such an important national news story to NBC's viewers? Is their involvement not an integral part of this story, on which NBC and MSNBC are reporting nearly every night? There's nothing illegal about excising key information from a news report for the sake of your own personal convenience, I guess. But you are doing your viewers a disservice.
