BBC vs Scientology: A match made in heaven   [Denis Boyles]

I'm not sure who you'd rather have knocking at your front door—a Scientologist or the BBC—but the two are going head-to-head today in advance of a shocking BBC "Panorama" broadcast tonight. The Beeb's controversial angle? Scientology might be creepy.

Scientology's getting its licks in first on YouTube:

  • Here is the BBC's reporter, John Sweeney, conducting an "interview" by screaming at the guy he's interviewing (caution: turn down the volume).

Meanwhile, the BBC has only...well, the BBC:

  • Here is Sweeney's explanation for flipping out. The video link on that page, incidentally, is to an on-air apology by an embarrassed BBC program editor.

But the explanation and the apology may be unnecessary, as Sweeney has his own defenders on YouTube, including this guy. Besides, regular BBC viewers may wish to point out that Sweeney in full throat is more cogent than Jeremy Paxman on his best day.

Who will win? The Scientologists? Or the BBC? That's the nature of a steel-cage death match, of course. It's just too close to call. Just watch and enjoy. In this contest, we all win.
